About Jennifer
I am currently employed with TriActive in Austin, TX, creators of web-based asset management and help desk software. I work on an Agile team where I create Java/J2EE modules and design user interface components with Ajax, Prototype, and Script.aculo.us. We are continually improving our software so I spend a good amount of time refactoring existing code to implement new features. I'm currently working with team members to modernize our help desk software with Ajax. I have a wide range of responsibilities at TriActive, which allows me to both explore new technologies and techniques and strengthen core software engineering skills.
I have a B.S. in Computer Science and a B.A. in Liberal Arts from The Evergreen State College (2008). I studied software engineering, as well as the historical, ethical, and political aspects of computing and technology. In addition to technical coursework, the programs at Evergreen required "softer" skills such as writing, research, and public speaking. My academic career culminated in a senior thesis software project where I designed a database sharing program for scientific researchers at the college.
From 2000-2006 I created websites for small businesses and larger software companies, including Sesame Communications and Apple Computer. I was passionate about developing engaging, easy to use websites that followed W3C web standards and accessibility guidelines. I enjoyed working with businesses to improve user experience and bring sites inline with web standards. These two factors ensured a good experience for customers, which helped businesses build a good reputation, ultimately promoting their financial success.
I entered software engineering because I thrive on the challenge of solving complex problems, the joy that comes from providing people with great software, and the imaginative design process that software engineering requires.
